MOM HOPES NEW HOSPITAL WILL BE BABY'S LEGACY By Fox 13 Story SPRING HILL - She was a happy and playful baby. Seven-month-old Rachael Jobmann was relatively healthy. She had all the typical sicknesses that a baby might have -- ear infections, an eye infection. So when she started coughing, her mother didn't think too much of it.
"She just seemed congested, was coughing. Having some difficulty breathing. So we took her into the local emergency room," Christy Jobmann said.
Rachael was admitted to a local hospital in Spring Hill. But 12 hours later, she died. She suffered from respiratory failure.
That was two years ago. Now Christy is fighting to keep her daughter's memory alive.
"She fought so hard to survive. And I'm fighting for her, to try and make a change. And that's what keeps me going," she said.
Christy believes Rachael died because the hospital she went to wasn't a pediatric hospital.
The closest children's hospital is miles away in Tampa, St. Petersburg, or Ocala.
The Jobmanns are now on a mission. They have petitions and they are gathering hundreds of signatures. They hope to force hospital executives to build an emergency pediatric hospital in Hernando County.
It could also serve families in Pasco and Citrus counties.
Those areas used to be retirement communities, but are not anymore. A recent ranking by the U.S Census of the top 100 fastest growing counties in the country, Pasco ranked number 50, while Hernando ranked number 83.
Christy has a meeting with hospital executives from Tampa in a few weeks. She'll meet with Hernando County commissioners on Tuesday to get them to sign the petition.
